30 Mar The Greyfriars Award 2015
Back in November I entered a worldwide fashion design competition called The Greyfriars Award. The brief was to put a new spin on The Greyfriars tartan which I thought I absolutely had to enter as my whole ethos is to put a twist on tartan and the kilt!
I submitted my designs and was so overwhelmed to find out that I was a finalist! The next stage was to manufacture my designs and they would then take to the catwalk in a finale extravaganza on March 12th 2015 where a panel of judges would pick the winner of the award. I created two gents and two ladies outfits.
I chose to go very avant-garde with the designs and incorporated lace and velvet into the kilts (yes, even in the gents outfits) as I knew to grab the attention of the judges when up against worldwide fashion designers I had to create something innovative and that would really capture their attention.
It was to my absolute delight that on the night the judges named ME as the winner of The Greyfriars Award 2015! Believe me when I say I put my all into this collection- the sleepless nights at my sewing machine were all SO worth it! Wow! The Greyfriars tartan was created as part of The Grassmarket Community Project which is a social enterprise in Edinburgh helping vulnerable people so the competition was a fantastic way to promote that!
Please see below for my illustrations of the collection and the collection in motion on the catwalk plus my winning moment captured! Illustrations are copyright of Siobhan Mackenzie and images copyright of Ian Georgeson.
Upon my win I was interviewed for STV News and STV Riverside Show which was great! http://glasgow.stv.tv/articles/313714-scot-siobhan-mackenzie-wins-greyfriars-tartan-fashion-show/
